Caregiver Care Consultations
We recognize that caregiving can be challenging. It can be stressful and overwhelming at times. It also takes a lot of dedication, patience, and support. That’s why Open Circle Support Services is pleased to offer care consultation. Care consultations are targeted to the needs and values of caregivers. A plan focused on the caregiver is developed through face-to-face meetings. Caregivers who participate in consultations may benefit in the following ways:
- Increased confidence in caregiving skills
- Improved emotional well-being
- Increased ability for self-care
- Increased willingness to use support services
- Decreased feelings of being burdened
- The capacity to provide care for longer
A caregiver who participated in care consultation said, “I was able to step back during the sessions and take a look at how things were impacting me and how I could better cope. This has helped me in becoming more patient and a little less stressed. I would definitely recommend this (care consultation) to anyone and especially those new to caregiving.”
Augustana Open Circle’s Clinical Social Worker Carol Ashwood is the caregiver consultant for Open Circle Support Services. Carol received her master’s degree in social work (MSW) from the University of Thomas/St. Catherine University and is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW). Carol is certified as a caregiver consultant through the Minnesota Board on Aging. Carol is also a certified program coach for the REACH Community Program through the Memphis Caregiver Center.
Care consultation is available on a fee-for-service basis using a sliding scale. Family meetings for three or more people can also be scheduled. For caregivers of those enrolled in the Alternative Care Grant (AC) and Elderly Waiver (EW) programs, care consultation can be paid for with authorization from a case manager.
